Archive Import: natural feature (waterfall) 95 metres high and situated close to the village of Howick, establishedat the old travellers river crossing just above the falls. In th 1850's travellers would ford the river just above the falls, and as a consequence the village of Howick, named for the then Secretary of Statefor the Colonies, Lord Howick, built up around it; a number of suicides and accidental deaths, as well as feats of heroism at the falls have been recorded over the years.
History: The township of Howick is situated just off the main road, 23 kilometres north-west of Pietermaritzburg. There, at an early stage of its journey from the rolling foothills of the Drakensberg to the Indian Ocean at Durban, the Umgeni plunges more than 95 metres down a vertical dolerite cliff before continuing on its way down a tortuous gorge. These falls and their impressive setting provide one of the most spectacular views not only in Natal but in South Africa.
The Voortrekkers and early British settlers were familiar with these falls, for they are only about a kilometre below Allemansdrift where the main route from the Drakensberg to Durban used to cross the river.
The falls with a surrounding area of 32 hectares have been proclaimed as a monument to protect them from being spoiled by possible future developments.
