Archive Import: This Drostdy(Residency) erected in 1906, was the first British public building to be built in the vicinity. It represents the commencement of Colonial rule over this area.
History: The town Paulpietersburg established in 1888, originally fell under the Zuid Afrikaansche Republiek and was at first named Paulpietersrust after President Paul Kruger and General Piet Joubert. This name was later changed to Paulpietersdorp and finally in 1896 to the present desigiation. On 27 January 1903 in consequence of the Anglo Boer War, the town and the surrounding district was annexed to Natal. The village was proclaimed a township in 1910 and a municipality 1958.
The Drostdy, erected in 1906, was the first British public building to be built in this area. It represents the commencement of Colonial rule and is a very good example of an early magistracy. Although not the oldest house in the area, it certainly is the best preserved of the older ones.
The Drostdy, as well as the nearby situated stables, have undergone no changes during its lifespan and therefore retains its original Colonial style.
