History: This building was designed by J.S. Brunskill for the Pietermaritzburg and Borough Police and was completed in 1884. The original building consisted of nine dormitory rooms for the staff, a dining room and eight cells on the Longmarket Street side of the building. The Borough Police occupied the building until 1927, when they were amalgamated with the South African Police, who in turn occupied the building until 1933 when the Publicity Association took possession.
The rear portion of the building was used as a fire station from 1884 to 1954. The bell tower is also an important feature of the building. This bell was used by the Police until shortly before the Second World War to sound the curfew for the Africans who had to be off the street by 9 o’clock.
Visual Description: Publicity House has a symmetrical facade with an imposing entrance portico at its centre. The roof of the portico is supported by columns in the Greek fashion. The front of the building is ornamented and has sliding sash windows, The iron latticework at the summit of the roof has been renewed. Wooden awnings have also been added to. the side windows but otherwise the building remains un altered.
