History: This observation post bears the appropriate name of World’s View and has a great attraction for the residents of Pietermaritzburg and for visitors from all over the country.World’s View, however, is not only a natural monument, but also worth seeing from an historical point of view. Since the arrival of the Voortrekkers in these parts in 1838, the only road from Durban via Pietermaritzburg to the Drakensberg went past this terrain for many years. Although it is untraversable today, the old Voortrekker road from Pietermaritzburg up and over the slope of the mountain across World’s View and the hills as far as Allemansdrift in the Umgeni River can be followed with ease. In some places the marks left by the brake-shoes on the layers of rocks can still be seen. The road probably followed an old footpath, but we have not the faintest idea which Voortrekkers first ventured to cross these heights in their wagons. Perhaps deputation of 150 strong, visited Port Natal in May, 1838, properly cleared this route for the first time, since they travelled to the coast in 30 wagons. In October, 1838, Comdt. Pieter Greyling settled at Boesmansrand, where the town of Pietermaritzburg was later laid out, and after that there was a regular traffic from Port Natal and from the interior across this pass. Not until many years had passed did the old road fall into disuse.
