Changes to SAHRIS!

The South African Heritage Resources Information System (SAHRIS) has undergone a generational upgrade and restructure. These changes to the site include, but are not limited to:

History: These ruins are the remains of Fort Ahrens or Fort Perseverence, better known locally as Esikanisweni Lager. Fort Ahrens was erected in the sixties or seventies of the nineteenth century, not for military purposes, but as a refuge for the civilian population. And the farmers of the neighbourhood did in fact avail themselves of it during the Zulu War (1878-79) and the Bambatha Rebellion (1906). Most similar civilian refugees have had to give way before continuing urban expansion, with the result that these ruins are virtually unique today. They provide a remarkable link with early colonial Natal.
