Archive Import: This elegant dwelling-house, based on the Edwardian style, was erected in 1905 and is situated on a portion of an erf granted in 1895.
History: The land on which this dwelling house is situated was originally granted to Petrus Erasmus on 16 July 1895. The house in the Edwardian style was built in 1905 by a Vryheid merchant as a dwelling house.
Visual Description: It is L-shaped with a verandah along two facades of the rectangular down strokes of the L, while the foot of the L is occupied by a sitting room of approximately 50 feet long end a study.
The main entrance to the dwelling is furnished with a typical Edwardian door with glassed middle panel. The glazing stretches to top rail level. Above the architrave is an arch, closed by an unhinged fanlight, the glazed area of which is broken by seven upright glazing bars, intersected by two cross bars, giving a very symmetrical pattern and lending a certain dignity to the whole effect. All other doors, except that leading to the sitting room, are painted but appear original and the unpainted door is of teak.
The front door leads into a spacious entrance hall, from which 2 bedrooms lead. The hail intersects a wide passage, almost as wide and high as the hell itself, which bisects the entire length of’ the down stroke wing. The passage than gives access to 4 further bedrooms, all of’ very generous proportions and with casement windows. The main bedrooms has a fine bay window which contains 10 cassets all opening on to the side verandah. The bedrooms have later ceilings, as these were rusting badly. The sitting room, which ends in a wide bay window, with sweeping views over the surrounding area is of truly palatial character. The fireplace is the usual red brick type with a brick porch over, the opening itself. The ceiling are new, but do not detract from the elegant spaciousness of the room.
The house is set on a hill and makes a noble show as one approaches it with its high ventilated corrugated iron roof in the usual Natal style. It has a large garden which sets it off to good advantage and is one of the features of the property. The front gate also retains its original iron gates, which were especially, imported when the house was constructed. They bear the name of the owner and are themselves part of the history of’ Vryheid. Single-storey dwelling with a L-shaped form: has a high corrugated iron roof: main entrance Edwardian door with glassed middle panels and fanlight:front gateway retains its original iron gates.
