This feature consists of remains of bottles, porcelain, bottle stoppers etc. These are typical of refuse middens from the Late 19th to Early 20th Century. Maker’s marks that could be identified include SA Breweries and Goldberg of Johannesburg. These are typical beer and soda water or mineral water bottles from the time. The latter had a marble bottle stopper inside. The following is known about the bottle with the letters GOLDBER[G] JOH[HANNESBURG] (bold indicate what could still be seen on the glass) it: According to Lastovica (1990) Goldberg & Zeffert was an Aerated mineral water manufacturer that operated out of Johannesburg between 1898 and 1910. They were part of the Niagara Mineral Water Works. They were formerly known as Horwitz & Co. that operated between 1894 and 1903, as part of the Niagara Steam Mineral Water Works. Both companies made use of Hatherley bottles. This of course refers to Sammy Marks’s Eerste Fabrieken Glass & Bottle Factor near Hatherley/Nellmapius (Pretoria). There are two possibilities in explaining this site. It may be a midden dating to the time period indicated or it may be part of refuse brought in at some stage during current activities on the site.
