From: "Alistair Hunter" To: Subject: RE: RE: Old bridge, Burgess farm near Blackwood Nursery Date: 03 December 2013 04:20 PM Hi Debbie The bridge has 900mm of soil placed on the bridge and this has to be removed to allow the pipeline to sit on the concrete road-way. The level of the road way has been build-up resulting in this 900 mm of soil place on the bridge see simple diagram below: Proposed pipeline bridge cross-section [cid:image003.png@01CEF043.91E51E70]Soil built up over the years, present road level. NOTE Width of bridge 7m – 1.1m for Pipeline & encasement = 5.9m for vehicles (Redline) Proposed pipeline position Construction options 1. First option is to possibly remove all the soil presently on the bridge (see red line above) and rework the approaches allowing ease of access and cover the bridge with 100mm of harden shale. The pipeline would daylight before the bridge and cross the bridge- return (subsurface) to the normal below ground position. The confusion is that the present road way is above the rail height see images below. The pipe will be covered by concrete culvert channel to protect the outside surface from damage due to heavy vehicles and other vehicles. Post construction the road would be in fact wider than the present width even with the pipe on the bridge. 2. Second option was that the soil is returned post construction and this will give a 7 m wide roadway as vehicle can drive on the concrete culverts [cid:image008.png@01CEF043.91E51E70][cid:image014.jpg@01CEF043.91E51E70] The red line indicate the present road level. [cid:image015.png@01CEF043.91E51E70][cid:image016.jpg@01CEF043.91E51E70] Red line indicates the present height of the road and the road is 7 m wide. Either way vehicle can cross the bridge unhindered. Hope this clears up any misunderstandings. Also, I have emailed all the stuff to the people at the Museum who are meeting to discuss this. Will forward you the emails if need be, regards Debbie ________________________________ From: Sent: Monday, December 02, 2013 12:48 PM To: debbie@archaic.co.za Subject: RE: Old bridge, Burgess farm near Blackwood Nursery Hi, The drawing showing “existing ground level” is still confusing. Please get them to correct. The Committee didn’t see the necessity for the concrete cover. Is the drawing showing a section as the pipe exits the bridge? Even then makes no sense. As noted, I think that this option is acceptable as it is reversible. The original plans affected the bridge, the bollards and the piers irreversably - involving partial demolition. This option has an infinitely lighter impact on the bridge. The pipe will be encased in a precast cement covering. Amafa has assessed this and it has been accepted and expedited by the Plans Committee and Built Environment Committee. Many thanks for helping! regards Debbie ________________________________ From: "Shakila Mahabeer" > Sent: Monday, December 02, 2013 9:22 AM To: debbie@archaic.co.za Subject: RE: Old bridge, Burgess farm near Blackwood Nursery Hi Debbie, Mr.Groom advised the museum office that you should set aside a date and time to meet with him and others regarding this matter before you proceed any further. Thanks Odette From: Debbie Whelan [mailto:debbie@archaic.co.za] Sent: 27 November 2013 05:15 PM To: shakilam@richbyrnemuseum.co.za Subject: fw: Old bridge, Burgess farm near Blackwood Nursery Hi Shakila, I spoke with Mr Groom last week regarding the old bridge on the old road parallel to the R56 close to Blackwood Nursery. Umgeni Water need to use the old bridge in part, in getting the water pipe to span the river. As noted, the water pipeline that is being constructed will be crossing the bridge and running along it in line with traffic movement, rather than damaging any part of it. For me this is the least impact, and can always be removed. Mr Groom indicated verbally that this did not seem to be an issue from a local heritage point of view. However, Amafa need this comment, should he still feel this way, from Mr Groom or the Museum in writing, so that they can process the application. Would it be possible for you to organise this for me, so that the pipeline can proceed? A return email indicating the opinion of the Richmond / Byrne Museum will suffice, I am sure! regards, and thanks for your time, Debbie ______________________________________________________________________ This email has been scanned by Umgeni Water Symantec Email Security.cloud service. www.umgeni.co.za ______________________________________________________________________
