ProposalDescription:

Proposed alterations and additions to existing house on ERF 1776, Westville, at 56 Jan Hofmeyer Road, Westville, 3629, Durban, eThekwini, KwaZulu-Natal Drawings 1090-01;1090-02;1090-03.

Expanded_Motivation:

The house is just over 60 years of age and is dated from a design and appearance perspective. The owners want to do some renovations to suite their current lifestyles without dramatically altering the house. The first alteration/addition is creating a statement entrance hallway. This was done by pushing the existing hallway forward towards the driveway where guests would be arriving. As the house is lower than the driveway, the entrance is extra heigh with a raked ceiling to make it stand out. A new guest loo and the extension of the scullery is seen either side of the new entrance to keep the symmetry of the entrance façade. The second alteration/addition was to create a more open plan feel to the kitchen/dining room. The dining room is extended and the existing roof is widened to accommodate this. Also a lean-to verandah is seen coming off the back of the house with a pergola next to it, to allow for an inside-outside lifestyle. Lastly the outbuilding was modified to accommodate a carport/store room for an extra vehicle and storage for garden equipment. Also the front of the roof is converted from a gable to a hip to match with the existing house. All the alterations/additions are to create a more modern flow and feel of the home without taking away from the few attributes that show this house its true age (for instance the very large and bold stone chimney and the sunken lounge). Also all the finishes will match with the existing, i.e. plaster and painted walls and a tiled roof.
