ProposalDescription:

Proposed 626.2m² Alteration and Addition to Existing Residence on Erf 566, 20 Elsmere Road, Belgravia, Kimberley. Sol Plaatje Local Municipality, Frances Baard District Municipality, Northern Cape. Drawing 14-152-WD00_rev0

Expanded_Motivation:

The suburb in which the site is located is one of Kimberley's older areas, with residences built over a 50 year period. The late Victorian style (also described as rich and eclectic in nature) of the existing building is typical of the late 1880s in RSA. This is evident in the building's verandah trimmings, spandrils, timber bay windows with its sashed window panes and corrugated hipped roof structure with its gabled finials and loft ventilators. The time period in which this building was erected is synonymous with the iconic mining 'boom' in Kimberley. The existing residence will be upgraded and restored without changing the inherent design of its facades; in particular, the facades facing Elsmere road. The additions to the existing are subtly done to compliment and preserve the character of the area. The ultimate aim is to restore the building to its former glory and to allow for its interior and amenities to function optimally with today's needs.
