Case Type:

ProposalDescription:

The application is for exhumation and re-interment of 11 graves situated on Erf 3 of Holding 87 North Riding Agricultural Holdings in Johannesburg, Gauteng Province.

Expanded_Motivation:

The application is for exhumation and re-interment of 11 graves situated on Erf 3 of Holding 87 North Riding Agricultural Holdings in Johannesburg, Gauteng Province. The process also involves search for approximately 9 graves that the family suggest to be located in the property which have not visible grave markers. An EIA process was conducted by the developer, but the EIA did not include a heritage impact assessment or archaeological impact assessment study. The current application is to mitigate the graves that will be impacted by the development of housing on Erf 3. The graves were identified by the security on site during site clearance and they then informed the developer who took it upon herself to follow a legal process to mitigate the graves. The process on the developer's side was to appoint a Funeral Undertaker to apply for grave relocation permits, conduct a public participation and social consultation process in order to identify the next of kin. The process resulted to the Lithole family coming forward to claim the graves. Through the undertaker, NGT was also appointed to apply for grave relocation permits with SAHRA Burial Grounds and Graves Unit - thus the current application.
