Development Type:

ProposalDescription:

The proposed gulley training structure and embankment stabilisation to protect the pipeline from being exposed on Portion 0 of Erf No. 1240 in Vrugreg in Frankfort, Mafube Local Municipality, Fezile Dabi District Municipality, Free State Province.

Expanded_Motivation:

Transnet needs to cover the pipe, stabilise and rehabilitate the embankments in order to protect the exposed pipeline. The exposed pipeline may be damaged and ruptured by further erosion. Should the pipeline be damaged in any way, there will be a disruption to the product/s flow to the inland towns and provinces, who are dependent on the fuel supplied via the pipeline. This will have negative repercussions to the regional economy. Damage to the pipe will also cause detrimental damage to the gully which now serves as a non-perennial channel to the Kromspruit, in the event that the product enters the watercourse. This will have an impact on flora and fauna downstream, as well as any other downstream users of the watercourse and its tributaries, thus impacting negatively on both the ecological and social environment. It is thus important that the pipeline remains protected from damage. The gabion structure installation, while necessary to perform the safety function of protecting the pipeline, is likely to also positively impact on the watercourse system’s functionality by preventing further erosion. The sedimentation downstream will be reduced, thus improving watercourse habitat.
