Case Type:

ProposalDescription:

We would like to export up to 8 samples total of charcoal for AMS dating analysis from test excavations at KEH Cave 1, a previously undated site. Samples were acquired during test excavations in December 2013 - January 2014, and will not be accessioned. This project is taking place at Knysna Erf 1399, in the Knysna Magisterial District, Western Cape Province, and under the authority of Heritage Western Cape (permit number 2237).

Expanded_Motivation:

We are applying for an export permit to undertake AMS radiocarbon dating of samples from a previously undated deposit. These samples will be derived from a test excavation beginning on or around December 30th, 2013. The excavation will cut into the erosional face of a thick (>4 meters) deposit that appears to contain Stone Age archaeological material. Samples will be taken far enough from the surface of the deposit to be as free from contamination as possible. Up to 8 charcoal samples total will be chosen for export. Each charcoal sample is 3 cm or less in length. All samples have been recorded in situ and coded prior to destructive analysis. AMS radiocarbon dating will be undertaken by Beta Analytic Inc. (4985 SW 74th Court, Miami, Florida 33155, USA; tel: (1) 305-667-5167, fax: (1) 305-663-0964, email: lab@radiocarbon.com, website: http://www.radiocarbon.com). We have elected to use a commercial laboratory because we need to obtain reasonably fast results for reporting and publication purposes, to develop our field strategy, and to support future grant preparation. These samples will provide the first documented age for this site. These data are essential to the archaeological interpretation of the site, including accurate contextualization of lithics and other artifacts, and to understanding sedimentation processes.
