ProposalDescription:

This permit application is to export ostrich eggshell fragments from the Besaansklip fossil hyena den near Saldanha in the Western Cape Province. Samples will be exported to the USA for radiocarbon dating.

Expanded_Motivation:

The Besaansklip hyena den near Saldanha (Western Cape Province) was excavated by the Council for Geoscience and Florisbad Quaternary Research Department (National Museum, Bloemfontein) in 1996 and 1998. The fossil collection has been at the Florisbad Quaternary Research Station since 2003, where preliminary analyses were conducted by the late Dr James Brink. His work on the collection was never published. The fossil assemblage is said to date to the last glacial maximum (LGM) (see unpublished report by Brink, 2005; pers. comm. by Brink in Stone et al., 2016), making it the only collection of this age from the southwestern Cape, but precise details on the ages are unavailable (e.g., what was dated; what dating technique was used; how many dates were obtained). In collaboration with Dr Lloyd Rossouw (Head of Department at Florisbad Quaternary Research Station), Dr J. Tyler Faith (the applicant; University of Utah) has been studying the fossil collection since 2020 as part of a broader effort to reconstruct LGM environments in South Africa (with Alexandra Norwood). The LGM age of the Besaansklip fossil assemblage needs confirmation and we have received permission from the National Museum of Bloemfontein and Heritage Western Cape (case number: 22030306AM1118; see attached Permit from HWC) to sample 10 ostrich eggshell fragments for radiocarbon dating. The initial plan was to date the specimens at iThemba laboratories in Johannesburg, but the load shedding situation means they are unable to generate radiocarbon dates at this time. This permit application is to export the 10 ostrich eggshell fragments (out of 100s) to the USA where they can be radiocarbon dated. Brink, J.S., 2005.
