ProposalDescription:

Environmental Basic Assessment Process and Mining Permit Application for the Proposed Formalization and Expansion of an Existing 0.2ha Borrow Pit (Ref: UBP018), Located on Sub 4 of Reserve 20 No. 15840, within the Ulundi Local and Zululand District Municipalities of KwaZulu-Natal

Expanded_Motivation:

The KwaZulu-Natal Department of Transport currently has 76 borrow pits in the Zululand District Municipal area, within the Nongoma and Ulundi Local Municipalities. The existing borrow pits are used to source materials used in the construction and maintenance of new and existing road infrastructure within the Zululand District. None of the existing borrow pits have a Mining Permit or Environmental Authorisation and thus the KwaZulu-Natal Department of Transport is in the process of conducting the necessary Environmental Processes in order to obtain the required Permits and Authorisations. Currently each individual site comprises an established borrow pit and no other related infrastructure, except for informal access routes. It is proposed to expand the borrow pits and properly furnish them with fencing and site camps for the duration of their operational phases, as well as properly formed access routes and drainage to prevent erosion and further environmental degradation. Seventeen of these existing borrow pits have been identified as priority sites in terms of expansion and upgrade. This Application comprises the Environmental Process for the expansion of Ulundi Borrow Pit 018 located in the Ulundi Local Municipality. Ulundi Borrow Pit 018 is located at coordinates S27°56'22.65" and E31°24'25.85". The borrow pit is currently 0.2ha in size. It is proposed to expand the borrow pit by 0.28ha. The borrow pit will be 0.48ha in size after the proposed expansion.
