Case Type:

ProposalDescription:

My name is Nadine Cloete and I am a filmmaker. This application is to film inside the Wonderwerk Cave. I am doing a documentary about language and cultural practitioners, Claudia Snyman and her grandmother Ouma Katrina Esau, who is the last speaker of the N/uu language and part of the San peoples of South Africa. The visuals in the Wonderwerk Cave were drawn by Ouma Katrina and Claudia’s ancestors. The cave is in Northern Cape.

Expanded_Motivation:

This documentary is being produced for Al Jazeera and will be broadcast as part of their documentary series called Africa Direct. Africa Direct emphasizes stories about Africa by Africans. The title of the documentary is Claudia and will be 8 minutes long. After being broadcast on Al Jazeera it will be made more widely available for the public on Youtube. Filming in the Cave will include filming of drawings on the walls and an interview with Claudia Snyman in the space. Claudia will speak about language and heritage preservation. We trust the making of the film will contribute to the promotion and preservation of the N/uu language and the San culture.
