ProposalDescription:

Declaration of the proposed Coega Thematic Interpretive Center as a National Heritage Site. The site will interpret the theme of the "Origins of Manufacturing" within the built and natural environments of the Coega Special Economic Zone (SEZ) according to the Coega Open Space Management Plan as approved by the Department of Environmental Affairs and the Heritage Management Plan approved by SAHRA. The Coega SEZ is located in Nelson Mandela Bay within the Province of the Eastern Cape.

Expanded_Motivation:

The Coega Special Economic Zone (SEZ) is located on the Coega River in Nelson Mandela Bay Municipality, in the Province of the Eastern Cape. The SEZ is operated by the Coega Development Corporation (CDC), a public entity responsible for managing approximately 9000 ha of land with 6000ha earmarked for industrial development and 3000 ha for environmental conservation. The CDC are in the process of complementing the SEZ with a Thematic Interpretive Centre, which will develop the theme of the "Origins of Manufacturing". The Coega SEZ and the associated Port of Ngqura derives its name from the Coega river, an area with significant Palaeoscience sites indicating a deep association with the origins of manufacturing. In keeping with the emerging Palaeoscience research agenda and policy context, CDC is undertaking work in three focus areas, namely: • Palaeosciences, Coega, and the Origins of Manufacturing • Development of a Heritage Site as a Themed Interpretive Centre • Coastal Conservation, Recreation and SEZ Enforcement The site will interpret the origins of manufacturing in the Coega river valley and broader Southern Cape from the early stone age through to the modern democratic era. A restored 1840 historic farmstead will house interpretive displays while the conserved areas of the Coega SEZ will provide outdoor experiences for an estimated 100,000 visitors per annum whilst interpreting the theme of the Origins of Manufacturing.
