Case Type:

ProposalDescription:

Application to obtain an archaeological excavation permit for Spitzkloof B Rockshelter for an academic research project studying Marine Isotope Stage 3 and Marine Isotope Stage 2. We have been excavating at Spitzkloof B since 2013 and we have not yet reached bedrock, so we need to continue excavations there. Spitzkloof Valley is in the RIchtersveld, Northern Cape.

Expanded_Motivation:

This is an application for an archaeological excavation permit for Spitzkloof B Rockshelter, Namaqualand. The aim of this research project is to identify how and when people lived in this semi-arid environment during Marine Isotope Stages that are poorly understood in South Africa. As the stratigraphy is well preserved it has taken us many years to slowly excavated the site, piece plotting artefacts and digging stratigraphically. The original permit was valid until 2016 but as I was on maternity leave, we did not excavate that year. We therefore require a new permit to continue working in this Rockshelter located in the Richtersveld, Northern Cape. We are confident that we are within the Marine Isotope 2 sediments based on the presence of Robberg-like bladelets. We want to describe the deposits in order to compare them with open sites on the landscape and to obtain paleoenvironmental samples to more precisely measure past environments when people were living in this semi-arid environment.
