ProposalDescription:

DATING THE ROCK ENGRAVINGS AT ASK1

Expanded_Motivation:

Since the work of Revel Mason and Robbie Steel in the 1980s the highly detailed fine line rock engravings of the Magaliesberg region have been sparely researched. Empirical dating of rock engravings has only sporadically been utilised in Southern Africa with the majority of dates being based on relative dating systems. In an international context, examination of C14 AMS dating of organics within engraved varnishes has been utilised extensively to date rock engravings with great success. Here we will to show that the same can be done in a Southern African context. Previously the dates of fine line engravings have been based on superimposition of engraved styles; this project should allow the development of a concrete chronological framework. This method is based around the process that after an engraving cut into a rock face through the removal of sedimentary material a patina of inorganic varnish will form over the engraving. As this varnish forms organic materials are trapped beneath this varnish layer. Dating of the organic compounds captured in this varnish is possible through AMS C14 dating.
