ProposalDescription:

Destruction application for the archaeological surface collections at MR001-MR008, Mier Rietfontein Solar PV and Battery Storage Project, Farm Mier 585, Dawid Kruiper local municipality, Northern Cape Province (Permit - CASEID-20703)

Expanded_Motivation:

PGS obtained a collection permit from the SAHRA (PermitID: 4014) to collect a representative sample of the archaeological material associated with the sites MR001-008 for analysis to determine temporal affiliation and possible techno-complexes. We can confirm that a representative sample was recovered for the surface scatters on site (MR001-008). The material recovered consisted of 469 lithic artefacts, 217 cores, 163 flakes and 89 formal tools. PGS currently processes this material in collaboration with the University of Pretoria’s Archaeology laboratory, after which the material will be submitted to the McGregor Museum for curation. Due to the extent of material post-processing, this interim report is submitted as backing for the destruction application to be submitted by the WSP to ensure the construction activities can continue. It is our opinion that the destruction process can continue with the backing of a SAHRA permit and the implementation of the recommendation below: It is recommended that during the destruction of these sites (MR001-008), the archaeologists monitor the earthworks. The work is stopped if significant finds are made until the material can be recovered. As reported in this document, the recovered material will then be included in the bulk samples collected from the excavation and sampling process. The site destruction must be done in a controlled manner utilising, where possible, a grader to remove the topsoil in a controlled manner during the monitoring by the archaeologist. Upon removing the cultural matrix, the construction can continue as required.
