ProposalDescription:

Application for destruction permit for Erf 1948, Walmer, Port Elizabeth, Eastern Cape

Expanded_Motivation:

Environmental authorisation has been granted by the Department of Economic Development and Environmental Affairs (DEDEAT) for the development of low cost housing on Erf 1948 in Walmer Port Elizabeth. A phase 1 Archaeological Impact Assessment (AIA) was conducted by Ms Celeste Booth (See attached) for the environmental basic assessment process. The project was loaded onto SAHRIS and the case number is 6590. A few historical artefacts distributed across the proposed area were documented during the AIA. These artefacts are associated with the Driftsands Historical Dump that extended from Happy Valley to Schoenmakerskop and includes the proposed development site, portion of Erf 1948. Earthworks and excavation during construction may lead to the destruction of these artefacts and it was therefore recommended by Ms Booth that a destruction permit be applied for.
