ProposalDescription:

South Africa Mainstream Renewable Power Developments (Pty) Ltd ("Mainstream") is proposing to develop a Main Transmission Substation (up to 400kV) and Overhead Powerline (275kV or400kV) and associated Electrical Grid Infrastructure support the Bultfontein Cluster of Solar Photovoltaic (PV) facilities located near Bultfontein in the Free State Province. The proposed grid connection infrastructure is required to evacuate and feed electricity generated by the PV facility to the national grid.

Expanded_Motivation:

The proposed development of the Main Transmission Substation (up to 400kV) and overhead powerline (275kV or 400kV) electrical grid infrastructure will support nine SEFs collectively referred to as the “Bultfontein Solar PV Cluster”, with a total combined capacity of up to 960 MW. Each individual SEF within the Bultfontein Solar PV Cluster will connect to the grid by way of its own supporting grid connection infrastructure. The Main Transmission Substation [MTS] (up to 400kV) and it’s associated OHL (275kV or 400kV) is required to evacuate and feed the electricity generated by the Bultfontein Solar PV Cluster into the national grid. The power line will be within a 600m wide corridor (300m on either side of the centre line), and this corridor will be applied to the perimeter of the MTS. Ten (10) separate applications will be submitted for the grid connection infrastructure projects i.e. Nine (9) applications for the 132kV switching stations and 132kV overhead power lines connecting to the MTS and one (1) application for the MTS and 275kV or 400kV overhead power line connecting to the existing Eskom power line. The ten (10) grid connection infrastructure projects are located within the Central Strategic Transmission Corridor. The focus of this application is the proposed development of the Main Transmission Substation (up to 400kV) and Overhead Powerline (275kV or 400kV) and associated electrical grid infrastructure to support the Bultfontein Solar PV Cluster located near Bultfontein in the Free State Province.
