Case Type:

ProposalDescription:

Mineralogical analysis of heated silcrete artefacts from Diepkloof Rock Shelter, Redelinghuys, West Coast, Western Cape Province (temporary permit)

Expanded_Motivation:

The programmed analyses on the 12 flakes from Diepkloof are going to be coordinated by Dr Patrick Schmidt of the University of Tübingen (Germany) who has a large experience in analysing heat treated archaeological artefacts. The period during which the analyses are planned corresponds to the winter and summer semester of the University of Tübingen during which Dr Schmidt has a teaching engagement that does not allow him to leave the Germany. Additionally, a large part of the analyses must be performed using a SETRAM SETSY thermobalance that is set up for a helium atmosphere and a platinum crucible. The thermobalance must be operated by a skilled technician who has experience in applying the adapted measuring protocol that was optimized for the analysis of silcrete. We trained a technician specially for these analyses in Tübingen during the past month. The availability of research machinery and the necessity of specially trained research staff that is only available in Germany require the proposed analyses to be performed abroad.
