ProposalDescription:

Proposed archaeological excavation at WVL3 and surroundings, within the De Wittekrans Colliery in Hendrina, Mpumalanga Province.

Expanded_Motivation:

Site of archaeological significance identified and recorded in 2018, and I now wish to excavate to gain further insight into the peopling of this area in the last two millennia. Wish to explore the material presence of incoming herders, as well as interactions between diverse late Holocene communities in central Mpumalanga. The site WVL3 is one of 27 painted sites that my team and I recorded in June and July of 2018 and, together, these sites hold the potential to help me achieve the project’s aims and objectives – the rock art in the shelter (which includes an image of a wagon) was painted in the colonial period, possibly by late hunter-gatherers (Maseko 2020) or farmers, yet other rock art sites in its vicinity allude to the presence of herders. While there are sites within the study area from which the project’s research questions could be answered, the uniqueness of WVL3 is that it can offer an archaeological record for the enduring presence of indigenous communities in this area, which was impacted by colonialism since the middle of the nineteenth century. The imagery at the site includes colonial-era items, but was arguably painted by indigenous communities, allowing for a rare opportunity to study, from the archaeological evidence, how hunter-gatherers’ cultural expressions and identities changed with the arrival of newcomers to the landscape.
