Case Type:

ProposalDescription:

It is proposed to export a number of samples of marine shell to the University of Georgia for radiocarbon dating of shell middens . The sites were excavated as part of a CRM project in 2009 but the proposed dating is to allow for further research on these sites to take place. It is not known at present how many samples will be used because further dates might be run based on the initial set. However, I have listed all possible samples here. The site are north of Lamberts Bay in the Western Cape Province.

Expanded_Motivation:

It is proposed to export a number of samples of marine shell to the University of Georgia for radiocarbon dating of shell middens . The sites were excavated as part of a CRM project in 2009 but the proposed dating is to allow for further research on these sites to take place. It is not known at present how many samples will be used because further dates might be run based on the initial set. However, I have listed all possible samples here. The site are north of Lamberts Bay in the Western Cape Province. The samples are as follows (the dash and number after DSS3 and DSS8 is for different excavations in the same site while DSS5 was only tested according to plots laid out on it - the number and direction label the test holes): DSS3-2: Spit 2, Spit 5 DSS3-5: Spit 2, Spit 5 DSS5 (17 East): Spit 2, Spit 4, Spit 6 DSS5 (18 North): Spit 2, Spit 5, Spit 7 DSS5 (20 West): Spit 2, Spit 5, Spit 8 DSS8-3: Spit 2, Spit 4, Spit 7 Essentially, the samples are aiming to date the top and bottom of each site with some midway samples included in case these prove necessary. The dating may also be motivation for further excavation of DSS5 (which has not been developed) in a research context.
