Case Type:

ProposalDescription:

In order to conduct palaeomagnetic analyses of a sequence of flowstone from Black Earth Cave, Taung World Heritage Site, samples BEC01, BEC02, BEC03, BEC04, BEC06, BEC07, BEC08, BEC09, BEC10, BECN01 and BECN03 need to be shipped to the Australian Archaeomagnetism Laboratory at LaTrobe University, Australia. As no facility in South Africa exists to do said analyses, the specimens must be shipped overseas.

Expanded_Motivation:

Additional analyses, while in the care of Professor Herries, will include Uranium-Lead, Uranium-Thorium (for dating) and stable isotope (Carbon, Oxygen) (for paleoenvironment) in order to gain the highest scientific output from the sepcimens. The specimens in question is purely geological in nature and have no cultural significance. The palaeomag analysis, and subsequent analyses, is vital for our understanding of the concise age of formation (of the cave), maximum ages for fossils recovered during excavations and environmental conditions during a time between 500ka and 1mya.
