ProposalDescription:

The importance of compatible restoration of historic masonries cannot be overemphasised as it helps maintain the historic structures for sustainable development, economic growth, and representation of a country’s history. My research study works towards characterising the original mortars from buildings on Robben Island, in the western Cape and proposing the suitable repair mortars for these buildings of great historical significance.

Expanded_Motivation:

As part of the testing experiments, materials sampling is required and the export of collected mortars to Spain - University of Granada. From 25 April to 30 July 2022, the experiments are scheduled to take place in Granada as part of the ongoing research study and collaboration created between CPUT and the University of Granada. This research will contribute great value to SAHRA (Built environment) and countries in Africa when it comes to sustainable restoration of heritage structures.
