ProposalDescription:

Export of sediment samples for OSL dating; micromorphology; cyrptotephra analysis; and leaf wax isotopic analysis.

Expanded_Motivation:

KP6 preserves a unique sequence that includes Fauresmith, Early Middle Stone Age, Howiesons Poort, and Wilton components (Lukich et al. 2019). Fieldwork in July 2022 (under permit 3564) produced a fresh exposure for sediment sampling to augment the observations presented in Lukich et al. 2020. Specifically there was a need to clarify the stratigraphy, dating, and leaf wax isotope record of the lowest part of the sequence and to use cryptotephra as a methodology to resolve the precise chronology of the Howiesons Poort component. Export request includes: Six micromorphology samples and 11 bulk sediment samples to be analyzed by Selina Amaral at the University of Toronto. Five OSL dating samples to be analyzed by Naomi Porat at the Israel Geological Survey. Ten samples for leaf wax isotope analysis to be analyzed by Michaela Ecker at the University of Kiel 89 samples (20-30 grams each) for cryptotephra analysis by Jayde Hiriak at Arizona State University. All samples are sediment and return of samples is not anticipated.
