Case Type:

ProposalDescription:

We would like to export 39 stone tools from the prehistoric site of Sibudu Cave (excavation directed by Prof. N. Conard, University of Tübingen) for more specialised analysis by Dr. Veerle Rots from Liège university. Dr. Veerle Rots is a team member of the field project at Sibudu Cave and she is responsible for the functional analysis of the stone tools to identify use-wear traces and residues preserved on the stone tools following their use in prehistory. The first phase of this study has been performed in the field, but some of the preserved residues require more detailed analysis with specialised equipment.

Expanded_Motivation:

The stone tools need to be analysed with metallurgical microscopes and with a scanning electron microscope with energy dispersive spectroscopy. Dr. Veerle Rots has this equipment available in her laboratory at the University of Liège, Belgium, due to which we would like to export a small number of the finds. The proposed analyses are non-destructive and allow to determine the specific organic residues that are preserved on the stone tools of Sibudu Cave, which will allow to precisely determine their use and the way they were hafted. The finds will be returned during the next field campaign in 2019.
