ProposalDescription:

Tronox has started its mining operations at Fairbreeze, Mtunzini, KwaZulu-Natal. Several HIAs have been undertaken and the studies recommend monitoring of the mine during the operational phase. This permit excludes applications for buildings and grave removals, that will be undertaken separately. The permit is for sampling and excavation of archaeological sites that are uncovered during the mining process. Annual reports will be submitted.

Expanded_Motivation:

Tronox is mining at Fairbreeze south of Mtunzini. The original EIA started in 1995 under Yskor. Subsequently Hillendale mine was initiated, and then Fairbreeze was restarted. The original permit (0006/03) for Fiarbreeze was was given to Tronox in 2010-2011. The mine then went into the pre-operational phase. By the time the operational phase had begun in 2016, the permit had lapsed. In addition to this, the previous permit was only given to Tronox (KZN Sands (Pty) Ltd) and this included the archaeological mitigation). This is a request for the permit to be renewed for Tornox and for Gavin Anderson to undertake the archaeological mitigation as required during the mining process. Unlike normal applications permission is requested to undertake required archaeological mitigation for three years as it is not feasible for the mine to stop every time a site is located. Archaeological surveys occur on a monthly basis and the mine has a process whereby any possible sites are reported.
