ProposalDescription:

We propose to undertake a comprehensive sedimentary ancient DNA (sedaDNA) sampling of Opperman’s north section at Grassridge Rockshelter that will include the Late Pleistocene, early Holocene, and mid-Holocene occupations. The results from this analysis will complement the ongoing fauna and botanical analyses, through confirming the presence of species identified, as well as potentially identifying the presence of animal and plant species that are not identifiable from traditional faunal and botanical assemblages. Moreover, sedaDNA analysis may provide insight into the ancient microbial communities preserved in the sediments, and contribute to our understanding of human pathogens effecting hunter-gatherer populations during the Late Pleistocene and Holocene. It is important to note that sedaDNA analysis cannot recover diagnostic human DNA. This research will take place in the Eastern Cape.
