ProposalDescription:

As part of an on-going process of upgrading electricity supply, Eskom propose the construction of a 88kV power line etween the Kookfontein and Jaguar substations in the Vereeniging magisterial district of Gauteng Province. This draft Basic assessment report has been re issued for public review due to a slight change in the powerline alignment. The section of the powerline between Jakobskop cemetery and Roshnee was realigned in order to avoid direct impacts on some of the graves within the Jakobskop cemetery.

Expanded_Motivation:

During the Basic Assessment, it was noted that the Alternative 1 route alignment traverse a graveyard directly west of the R82 road and west of the residential area of Roshnee and Dadaville. As a result the route alignment was re-aligned (moved 20 metres away from the graves) to the east of the R82 and only crosses over the R82 road after the graveyard. A private landowner and Gautrans objected to the realignment due to future land uses. Eskom has now realigned the powerline to transect the western portion of the Jakobskop cemetery which is currently vacant (no graves). The heritage specialist following this alignment revisited the site and reviewed the alignment and recommended that the proposed development can continue with the application of mitigation measures especially in areas located in close proximity to the cultural and heritage features (graves). A cemetery management plan (conservation plan) has been compiled by the Heritage specialist for a section of the line that will transect the graveyard.
