Case Type:

ProposalDescription:

Following our Quarterly Permit Report (2015-2018) submitted in December 2018 in which we detailed the context of our ongoing research on the newly discovered hominin and faunal remains from the Kromdraai site (26°00'41''S, 27°44'60''E), here we propose to continue our excavation at this site located in the so-called "Cradle of Humankind", Gauteng Province.

Expanded_Motivation:

Between 2014 and 2018, during our field work at the site of Kromdraai and in addition to important fossil discoveries, we could demonstrate that the extent of this site and its stratigraphy have not yet been fully understood. Indeed, we could demonstrate that the so-called "Kromdraai hominin site" (also called "Kromdraai B") had a larger extension 20 m toward the north than it was previously thought. We could also discover two previously unrealized sedimentary Units (Members O and P) from the oldest part of the stratigraphy of this site. We now propose to continue our excavation of an area where we can expose both Members O and P in order to (i) complete the ongoing detailed sedimentological analysis and geological mapping of these two sedimentary Units; (ii) improve our sampling of the fossil assemblage from these two Units for a better palaeobiological and palaeoecological interpretation. By focusing our attention on relevant information recorded since 2014 at the site of Kromdraai from its early and previously unrealized stratigraphic record (represented by Member O and P), the first task of our proposed research at Kromdraai aims to provide the first Pliocene-Pleistocene reference stratigraphic sequence in southern Africa (i.e. from one single site) for which cranial remains from both Australopithecus and Paranthropus specimens can be investigated. This reference sequence will be used to provide a palaeoenvironmental and phylogenetic scenario of the Australopithecus to Paranthropus/Homo succession in this region.
