ProposalDescription:

Makahane Permit Application

Expanded_Motivation:

The purpose of the first season of excavation is to obtain an updated, general idea of the age, significance and broader cultural meaning of the site since the site has not been excavated in recent decades (Its first and only formal archaeological investigation was by Eloff & De Vaal 1963 (Eloff & de Waal 1965)) and there has been several advances in the field of archaeology. The site, as Eloff and de Waal (1965) themselves stated had (and still has) the potential to provide significant information with regards to the prehistory of the area. It will also provide us with updated, additional samples to store that can be consulted at later date for additional research, education and promotion of our cultural heritage at large. Artefacts will be collected from the surface and excavations of representative samples of the artefactual and faunal and possibly botanical material will be conducted to allow for the updated and refined characterization of the site and dating.
