ProposalDescription:

Material analysis of a Late Iron Age ceramic assemblage from KwaZulu-Natal to evaluate a hypothesis dran from ethnographic records on the social origins of different coloured vessels. Material analysis of a Late Iron Age ceramic assemblage from KwaZulu-Natal to evaluate a hypothesis dran from ethnographic records on the social origins of different coloured vessels. Mineralogical and chemical analysis of archaeological potsherds stored in the KwaZulu-Natal Museum archaeological archive. the planned analysis of some 400 of these shreds out of 4736 sherds, involves edge trimming of sherds to produce a clean surface to facilitate XRF analyses. The project involves both portable and conventional XRF, with conventional XRF restricted to 20 ceramics 5% of the 400 sherds. Note that conventional XRF demands crushing and powdering of sherds samples. These same samples will be subjected to XRD analysis.

Expanded_Motivation:

The subject of the proposed research is a collection of archaeological potsherds stored in the KwaZulu-Natal Museum. The potsherds derive from Tim Maggs's excavation of the site Mgoduyanuka near Bergville, KZN, in November-December 1975. Maggs published an excavation report that includes a stylistic analysis of the potsherds. The sample includes red, black and plain burnished sherds, sherds with textured decoration and plain sherds. The site itself is situated in a simple geological context which is useful in that it limits variability in the surrounding soils and clays. The potsherd sample therefore is most suitable for the project, which aims to test a hypothesis about the relationship between pot colour and agnatic vs marital relationships.
