Case Type:

ProposalDescription:

The University of Stellenbosch would like to do some DNA sampling of the Near Eastern Mummified Head.

Expanded_Motivation:

According to the register, F. J. Read of Johannesburg donated the Near Eastern Mummy Head to the museum in 1921. The inscription about the head is as follows, “Mummy’s head, 2nd Archaic Period. The wife of Herodotus, King of Ecbatana, over 2700 years old. It was got from the royal tombs at Ecbatana, capital of Media. The tomb was restored by Nebuchadnezzer 606 BC.” This is the story that F.J. Read told the museum. There are no other documents that have come to light to confirm this inscription, therefore the DNA testing might give a better insight into the origins of the Mummified Head.
