HeritageAuthority(s):

ProposalDescription:

The proposal is to elevate the status of the Cape L'Agulhas lighthouse from a provincial heritage Site, to a national heritage site based on its significance, nationally and internationally.

Expanded_Motivation:

The nomination is based on the heritage values of the Lighthouse. The Lighthouse is unique by it being at the furthermost tip of Africa thereby making it the southermost Lighthouse and building in Africa. It is also unique in that it is located where two oceans meet, the Atlantic and Pacific. The lighthouse is also the second oldest lighthouse in South Africa and also the oldest government building in the southern Overberg region. The lighthouse is also significant in that it is the only Lighthouse in Africa to house a museum exhibition. The Lighthouse as a building has international significance in the civil engineering field is shown by the fact that in 2016 it was declared an International Historic Civil Engineering Landmark by the American Society of Civil Engineers. In southern Africa, there are only three landmarks declared such.
