ProposalDescription:

Eskom Holdings SOC Ltd (Eskom) is proposing the construction of the new Iphiva 400/132kV Substation and associated infrastructures on Site 6.1, within the jurisdiction of Nongoma Local Municipality in the Zululand District Municipality, KwaZulu-Natal.

Expanded_Motivation:

Eskom Holdings SOC Ltd (Eskom) has appointed SiVest SA (Pty) Ltd as an independent Environmental Assessment Practitioner to undertake an Enviromental Authorisation Application for the proposed Iphiva 400/132kV Substation and associated infrastructures on Site 6.1, near the Town of Mkuze within the jurisdiction of Nongoma Local Municipality in the Zululand District Municipality, KwaZulu-Natal. The proposed Substation and associated infrastructure will be integrated into the existing electricity network by a 400 kV transmission powerline to the Normandie Substation, and approximately 165 km of 132 kV distribution powerlines that link into the Iphiva 400/132kV Substation. A total footprint of 600 x 600 m (i.e, 36 ha) will be required for the development, within a site-specific study area of 1km x 1km. This footprint will include construction requirements and will be rehabilitated and fenced-off. The 36 ha development footprint area includes provisions for an 80 m high microwave radio communication mast, oil and fuel storage facilities, and an oil bund to contain any accidental transformer oil spills. The substation will comprise standard electrical equipment, including transformers, reactors, busbars, and isolators. The scope of work will also entail site levelling before construction and a new access road.
