Case Type:

ProposalDescription:

It is proposed to sample a suite of 16 small Stone Age archaeological sites (surface artefact scatters) within a diamond mine in the Richtersveld, Northern Cape.

Expanded_Motivation:

It is proposed to sample a suite of 16 small Stone Age archaeological sites within a diamond mine in the Richtersveld, Northern Cape. The sites are all surface artefacts scatters and the sampling will be by means of surface collection from an alphanumeric grid. In three few instances SAHRA requested that pottery be collected from sites that had not been earmarked for mitigation initially due to the very limited amount of material present. A decision on the level of spatial detail will be made on site in these three instances and it may be more appropriate to simply collect up the pot sherds. It is notable that standards have changed over the last decade and more ephemeral sites would now be considered for mitigation than was the case in the past - this will be borne in mind during on-site decision-making. The sites are ESA, MSA and LSA, some of them having a mix of ages present.
