Case Type:

ProposalDescription:

Site testing of a potential midden on Erf 24722, a declared site (The Old Presidency), President Brand Street, Bloemfontein, Free State, for mitigation purposes

Expanded_Motivation:

During the field survey for an HIA (SAHRA CaseID: 8745) a possible midden was identified next to the fence in the north-western corner of Erf 2/24722 (a declared site, the Old Presidency) that might be negatively affected by the proposed development of the new Reserve Bank of the Free State on the adjacent Erf 37103. SAHRA's interim comment is for the midden to be mitigated before final approval of the new development can be considered. Surface indications are inconclusive in terms of confirmation of it being a midden. The proposed modus operandi for the purpose of this permit is accordingly to lay a standard 1 x 1 m grid over the entire area of approximately 3 X 4 m of the potential midden and do several auger tests to determine if it is: (A) a midden, and if so, (B) of an archaeological nature. In case of the latter a full-scale mitigation will be conducted under a new permit. If not, SAHRA will be provided with a report of the auger tests in order to finalise their decision on the assessment of the new development.
