Case Type:

ProposalDescription:

A 3-year archaeological fieldwork-based exploration of the Oorlogskloof Nature Reserve and surrounding area, including the Bokveld escarpment and Klein Koebee River Valley.

Expanded_Motivation:

The overall project will incorporate (a) locating and recording of rock art, (b) test excavations and associated analysis, and (c) the collecting of relevant oral histories from the region. Archaeological work in this unique escarpment region has been extremely limited thus far, and the recording of rock art and initial analysis of artefacts will provide a useful comparative database for the more well-researched surrounding landscapes. For the purposes of the current permit application details apply to excavations in Oorlogskloof Nature Reserve 2015-2018. A further permit application for any farm-based sites identified as having excavation potential will be submitted after the first fieldwork season, once written permission from individual land owners has been secured in person during late-2015. The location encompasses Nieuwoudtville, Hantam District, Namakwa Municipality, Northern Cape AND Vanrhynsdorp, Matzikama District, West Coast Municipality, Western Cape. Oorlogskloof Nature Reserve, falling within the Northern Cape, is marked as protected area 273 on the accompanying location map, with the wider research area also indicated. Research to be undertaken with logistical support from DENC Northern Cape, Oorlogskloof Nature Reserve, SANBI, RARI Wits, Wits Institute for Evolutionary Studies, McGregor Museum Kimberley, and the School of Heritage Sol Plaatje University.
