Case Type:

ProposalDescription:

Permanent export of ostrich eggshell samples and calcrete samples is requested. Ostrich eggshell will be used for isotope analysis to collect data on palaeoclimates and for Amino Acid Racemisation (AAR) dating. Calcrete will be sectioned to investigate the development of the sequence and presence of fossil inclusions. Preparation of OES and calcrete analysis will take place at University of Exeter with isotope analysis carried out at University of Southampton, and AAR at University of York.

Expanded_Motivation:

The motivation for the project is to generate data as part of research on the Bundu Farm archaeological site. Excavations in the late 1990s uncovered and early Middle Stone Age assemblage at Bundu, dated by electron spin resonance to 300-150 ka, thereby coincident with the genetic emergence of modern humans. Few sites have been recorded for this period or from the central interior of South Africa. Building new data on past climates / environments at Bundu and further dating of the site, is important to placing the analysis of fauna and worked lithics at the site in context. A Quaternary Research Association grant has been secured for the isotope analysis.
