ProposalDescription:

The Rijksmuseum would like to borrow the journal for an exhibition on relations between the Netherlands and South Africa from the early seventeenth century to the twentieth century.

Expanded_Motivation:

The Rijksmuseum is planning an exhibition exploring the complex history of relations between the Netherlands and South Africa from the early seventeenth century to the twentieth century. This will be the first occasion that such an exhibition will be shown in the Netherlands and it will be accompanied by a scholarly publication. Robert Jacob Gordon (the author of the journal) was the VOC commander in the Cape around 1770-1790. The Rijskmuseum currently holds the art works and the Brenthurst Library the manuscript journals and notes of Robert Jacob Gordon. Gordon made many scientific and cultural notes on the South Africa of the time. This exhibition will bring the two items together.
