Case Type:

ProposalDescription:

HWC has granted permission for the destructive sampling of a number of fossil specimens presently housed at Iziko. This permit application is for the export of these samples from South Africa to the Max Planck Institute for Chemistry in Germany

Expanded_Motivation:

Our project involves geochemical analysis of tooth enamel samples from Pleistocene fossils to measure their stable carbon (13C), oxygen (18O), and nitrogen (15N) isotopic composition. This work builds on new technological developments that now allow us to measure 15N in mammal tooth enamel (Leichliter et al., 2021), and to obtain measurements of 13C and 18O using extremely small amounts of enamel powder (Vonhof et al., 2020). Prior to these advances, it was impossible to measure all three isotopes in the same fossilized tissues older than 100,000 years (e.g., tooth enamel or bone).
