Case Type:

ProposalDescription:

I would like to export sixsedimentnt samples and three lithic stone tools for luminiscence dating to the University of Washington (to Prof. James K. Feathers)

Expanded_Motivation:

Mwulu’s Cave, located in Limpopo Province, was excavated in the 1940s by Phillip Tobias, who assigned the entire stratigraphic sequence to the Pietersburg industry. This industry is one of the few regional variants within the Middle Stone Age (MSA) of southern Africa, and its definition and our understanding of it are not good, mostly because other techno-traditions have received more attention. Mwulu’s Cave is an interesting site because it offers the opportunity to understand multiple occupation levels assigned to this vague entity. This year I have directed an archaeological excavation at this site (with a permit issued by SARAH), in order to give a stratigraphic context to the material excavated by Tobias, and to new archaeological finds. I have refreshed the profiles and described in detail the site stratigraphy by means of drawings, photogrammetry and extracting micromorphology blocks. Six sediment samples and three burnt lithics were taken for Luminescence dating. One of the priorities of this project it is to clarify the chronology of the so called Pietersburg. With the six sediment samples and the three burnt lithics we aim to compare two different luminescence dating methods in order to further understand the chronological position of the Pietersburg.
