ProposalDescription:

Permit for expanding test pit excavations in the Varswater Formation of Langebaanweg E-Quarry.

Expanded_Motivation:

We here apply for permits to open new excavation in the Varswater Formation at Langebaanweg E-Quarry. These excavations will form part of a multidisciplinary collaborative project (called Evolution of west coast ecosystems) being undertaken by the applicants under the auspices of the Iziko South African Museum, and for which AOP funding has been granted by the NRF. The aims of this research is to investigate the effects of post-Miocene climate change on the biota and biodiversity on the west coast of South Africa, and to investigate the timing of the onset, and development of, aridity in the region using faunal and microbotanical research. We seek to address these aims by conducting excavations at LBW E-Quarry in a locality identified from test pit excavations in 2014 as a marsh facies (Cohen 2017). This deposit preserves the contact between the MPPM and LQSM, was rich in fossils, particularly microfauna and had a high silt content with a dark colour, indicative of possible organic reservation. Expanding excavations in this locality will allow us to investigate the relationship between the MPPM and LQSM, particularly looking at sedimentological and faunal differences between the members. From this we will be able to ameliorate our understanding of the palaeoenvironment on the west coast at the time of deposition.
