Case Type:

ProposalDescription:

The extension of the permit is issued to continue previous activity as for collection of breccias, sediments and fossils, and excavation of Aves Caves Karstic complex (AC and AC VI) and site maintenance of Aves Caves Karstic complex (AC to AC VI), at CC (Cobra Cave) and GR (Garage Ravine Cave); as well as the continued preparation of backlog from GR (Garage Ravine Cave), CC (Cobra Cave) and HC (H Cave) and collection of dating samples. Bolt’s Farm, Sterkfontein 173 IQ (portion 12), Gauteng (9/2/233/0032).

Expanded_Motivation:

BFCS-Greensleeves is a faunal-bearing area in the Cradle of Humankind World Heritage Site of UNESCO with different loci. It is known to have yielded some large suids such as the almost complete skull associated to the mandible of Phacochoerus modestus (TM BF 3-335) at Cobra Cave (Cooke, 1993; Pickford & Gommery, 2016). Aves Cave I yielded an important collection of suid remains belonging to two taxa, Potamochoeroides hypsodon and Notochoerus capensis (Gommery et al., 2016; Pickford & Gommery, 2016, 2020). These two species indicate an age for Aves Cave I similar to that of member 3 and 4 of Makapansgat Limeworks (approximately between 3.03 and 2.58 million years). They belong probably to the ancestor group of warthogs. The fossil collection of Bolt’s Farm – Greensleeves portion is not important in comparison with most of the well-known sites from the Cradle of Humankind such as Sterkfontein, Swartkrans, Kromdraai,… A more important collection of fossils from Bolt’s Farm exists in the USA (California University Expedition of Camp between 1947-48). It is important to increase this collection at the DNMNH for the faunal and environmental studies but also for the heritage promotion (exhibition for example). The HRU team new collection for Bolt’s Farm-Greensleeves comprises 688 catalogued numbers, only for the macrofauna. The Bolt’s Farm team is composed of specialists of different groups of animals, large to medium in size (macrofauna) but also small to very small (microfauna). In East Africa, the microfauna is well studied which is not generally the case in the Cradle of Humankind. The microfauna represents a large part of the extant biodiversity and so in the past. The specialists of macrofauna of the HRU team have a great experience in the study of macrofauna from plio-pleistocene (or older) sites from East and/or South Africa which will allow comparisons between these two geographic regions. Many questions concerning the evolution of the South-African biodiversity exist and the answers depend probably of the studied groups (local evolution, migration in or from South Africa) and the geological period considered?
