Case Type:

ProposalDescription:

The aim of this proposal is to radiometrically date an important site in the Free State Province that contains the Permo-Triassic boundary. Initial LA ICPMS dating of two samples indicates a high number of detrital zircons that can be sent for ID-TIMS dating.

Expanded_Motivation:

The End-Permian Mass Extinction (EPME) is generally regarded as the largest mass extinction in Phanerozoic history. In marine strata the Permo-Triassic boundary (PTB) is well-constrained where it has been radiometrically-dated to an interval of some 60 ky approximately 252 Ma. However, the age and duration of the EPME in the terrestrial realm, as well as its possible synchrony with that of the marine realm, is debated. My colleagues and I aim to shed light on issues pertaining to the identification and position of the terrestrial EPME in South Africa using a site on the farm Nooitgedacht 68 in the Xhariep District, Free State Province of the South African Karoo Basin. This study offers the first detailed vertebrate and floral collections data from a single terrestrial PTB sequence that will also be well-constrained by absolute (detrital zircon geochronology) dating methods.
