Case Type:

ProposalDescription:

PGS Heritage (Pty) Ltd, has been appointed by Western Platinum (Pty) Ltd – Sibanye Stillwater Marikana Operations to affect the relocation of approximately ten (10) graves located in an informal burial ground on portions 154 and 155 of the farm Rooikoppies 297 JQ, Marikana, North-West Province.

Expanded_Motivation:

The graves are located within the Karee 3 Return Water Dam and are not currently affected by mining activities but due to rising water levels the family requested that the graves be relocated and are located at the following coordinates: • K3Dam – approximately 10 graves at GPS Coordinates: -25.686806⁰ and 27.448750⁰ The project was originally handled by Mr Coen Nienaber (BA3G) and Doves (who is still involved). PGS Heritage was initially appointed to handle the permit applications and exhumation phases of the project and was appointed to take over the project management and stakeholder engagement. The original stakeholder engagement process, aimed to identify the correct closest next-of-kin of the graves, commenced on 25 October 2015. The next-of-kin (NoK) has been engaged and has at the time given written consent for the relocation. Since various factors delayed the process the process was started anew in 2020. Additional to this, the following actions were taken: • Bilingual Site notices announcing the intention to relocate the graves were erected at the gravesite. These were in place for 60 days as per legislation. • Bilingual newspaper notices announcing the intention to relocate the graves were published in the Daily Sun (14 June 2016) and the Platinum Weekly (13 May 2016). It should be noted that the Sibanye Stillwater has been in continuous contact with the NoK representatives since 2015 when they first requested the relocation, and they were made aware of the delays regarding the project. We will be assisted in this regard by Doves Funerals -Rustenburg Franchise.
