Case Type:

ProposalDescription:

Our company was appointed by the Nkomati Mine to effect the relocation of 25 graves situated in three informal cemeteries (NKMC07, NKMC08 and NKMC10) that will be directly affected by mining activities on the farm Nkomati 770JT near Badplaas, Mpumalanga.

Expanded_Motivation:

Cemetery NKMC07 consist of 14 stone packed graves belonging to the Mbokane family, the graves is clearly laid out in several rows and are orientated along a north/south axis. One of the graves in this cemetery is situated in the wall of a stone enclosure. Cemetery NKMC08 consist of one stone packed grave belonging also to the Mbokane family and one unidentified, possible grave. Both these graves are situated within a small stone circle. While Cemetery NKMC10 is made up of nine stone packed graves, all belonging to the Mbokane family, they are aligned in a straight line also along a north/south axis. None of the graves in this cemetery have a formal headstone or feature identifying the deceased. These affected graves will be adversely affected by the future open cast mining activites of the Nkomati Mine. Due to nature of open cast mining, the graves can unfortunately not be left "in situ". An in-depth social consultation process to identify the next-of-kin of the affected graves established in 2008 that these graves 'belongs' to the extended Mbokane family. Negotiations since then led to an agreement being reached and permission for the relocation of the 25 graves was given by the Mbokane family.
